Bible verse about Abram addressing God as Adonai

Adonai Meaning

Adonai literally means “Lord” or “Master.” It was first used by Abram in Genesis 15:2 when Abram questions God on His promise to provide him with an heir. Abram could only see with his eyes that he and Sarai were old. In addition, she had been barren throughout their marriage and the only child born to claim Abram’s inheritance was a slave in Abram’s household, Eliezer of Damascus.

Even though Abram could not see with his eyes how God would do it, He addressed God as his Master and asked the Lord what He would give to Abram to make this happen. Abram didn’t question the Lord’s ability to provide, he walked by faith and not by sight, believed God, and God credited this to Abram as righteousness. By submitting himself to God as Lord and Master over his life and putting his faith in God, Abram was given God’s amazing blessing and provision.

Domestic Monastery

Ding, dong.

Dinggg, dongggg.

The monks who are working feverishly on writing manuscripts, bent on hands and knees in prayer, and working to keep the monastery functioning, are summoned by the bell. Immediately, they forfeit the task at hand to respond to the summons.

How often are you summoned? How often are you interrupted as a mom? Put on hold, blocked from completing the simplest of tasks, completely thwarted from your own will over and over and over again? “Mom?” “MOM!” “MOoooom!”

The Source of Frustration

As a Christian mom it’s easy to get lost in the weeds questioning how you can get it all done. This is when you are working on your own might. You’re walking with your own sight, rather than submitting yourself to God as the Lord and Master who will provide you with what is needed to accomplish the good work He is setting out for you.

Your monastery is your home and your bell is the little child at your feet, or the voice calling from the bathroom asking you to wipe their butt, or your husband’s need to feel appreciated when he comes home from work. It’s usually not things you want to do, but rather God’s will for you. (And doing God’s will always comes with an unseen blessing!)

We come into frustration when we don’t submit, when we want to go our way rather than God’s way. This can be as simple as the desire to finish a load of laundry. Why does one load take four hours to finally finish folding? The desire is our own. In contrast, it is much easier to yield your will to God’s and not worry about the things left behind. When you are walking in the Spirit rather than the flesh, the Lord God will multiply everything you need, including time. He is the Creator! He is the Provider! Adonai is the All Sufficient One. He can do it.

A Question of Will

The question is not a matter of might but a matter of will. Will you do it? Will you present yourself as a willing, living sacrifice each morning to do the will of Adonai, the Lord your God? Similarly, will you recognize His rightful position over you? And your rightful place as bondservant? A bondservant does not flinch in doing the will of his master. He simply does it, without the expectation of praise and without the delusional notion that he is doing anything above what he is meant to do.

It’s a willingness to yield ourselves totally to Him, to completely recognize who He is and submit, to bend the knee, bow the stiff neck. When the bell tolls you drop what you’re doing and answer the call of your Master. Recognize His rightful place to rule you and your rightful place to listen, without grumbling, arguing, or complaining so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God.

Bible verse about submitting to God as Adonai
From Servant to Friend

First you know God as Adonai, as a servant knows his master. But as you abide in Him and in His dwelling place, the servant becomes the friend. Motherhood is a long and arduous season. As you become acquainted with sorrows, you become friends with the Man familiar with suffering. Jesus Christ who called you, who bought you out of bondage, then sets you free in His household.

The bondservant becomes the son. The bondservant is given a seat at the King’s table. A son of the King, the Most High, given a rightful claim in the inheritance of God. This is the path of submitting to God as Adonai, as Lord and Master. Yield yourSELF to Him on a daily basis and answer the bell when you are summoned.

Adonai Scripture Reference

Genesis 15:1-6

After these things the word of the Lord (YHWH) came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”

But Abram said, “Lord God (Adonai YHWH), what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” Then Abram said, “Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir!”

And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir.” Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”

And he believed in the Lord (YHWH), and He accounted it to him for righteousness.
