The Closing Shift

Before I was a mom, before I was a wife, before I was an adult living an adult life, responsible for feeding five mouths three square meals a day, every day, in perpetuity, I was a waitress. As a waitress, I always worked the “closing shift.” Each closing shift was exactly the same, night in and night out. Every night I would line the same glasses up in the same manner on the same shelf, vacuum the same floor I cleaned just the night before, wipe down the same tables I wiped a thousand times. Does any of this sound familiar to you as a SAHM?

When I began momming, and God convicted me heavily that I needed to stop being so darn lazy, I started to look at my life as a SAHM more like a job. As a new mom, this helped me to start cultivating systems in order to make things run more efficiently. Since I knew how the restaurant ran, I decided to figure out how I should run my house. Eventually I came up with my own SAHM night routine that I dubbed my “closing shift.”

How to Close Down Your House at Night

In order to create your own SAHM night routine you need to identify 1. the tasks that must be done daily and 2. the things you can do at night that will prepare your home for the next day. Your closing shift should not take longer than a half hour to 45 minutes.

Tasks that must be accomplished daily include:

  • cleaning up after dinner
  • wiping down the counters
  • cleaning up clutter and toys
  • doing a quick cordless vacuum

Tasks that will make your next day easier include:

  • starting the dishwasher
  • loading the washer with clothes so you can start a load the next morning
  • prepping breakfast
  • packing the diaper bag
  • packing lunches

While this printable is designed to focus mostly on household chores, there is plenty of space for you to add your own needs! For example, if you have been struggling to make God a priority in your days, you should block some quiet time in at night. “Man does not live on bread alone, but man lives on every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.” You need to eat every day in order to stay alive. Taste and see that the Lord is good every day. Use this SAHM night routine checklist to get done whatever it is that you need to accomplish!
